And The Monday Night Trivia Winners Are.....

Congratulations to the BLOHARDS team for their hard-fought win earlier this week in their debut foray into the Prof. Thom's Monday Night Trivia Contest.  In winning, the BLOHARDS set a new competition record for most total points and fewest incorrect answers. The questions and other details of the event are chronicled here on Quizmaster John Quinn's blog: The Mighty Quinn Media Machine.

The well-assembled, nattily-attired squad was captained by Peter "Gyroball!" Collery, and rounded out by six of the sharpest minds available on short notice.  Consistent with the sound logic displayed all night, the group reasoned that there is not a "T" in the native Hawaiian language "because there is no 'T' in 'Don Ho.'" 

As with the expectations around Roger Clemens pitching in a Single-A game, the BLOHARDS have more to lose than to win were they to compete every week at PT's.  That said, the team is expected to defend its all-time record next month, presumably after several members spend the month familiarizing themselves with current events in rap music, the BLOHARDS' only speedbump on the road to a memorable win. 

Barring any date conflicts at Prof. Thom's, the next BLOHARDS' highly informal viewing event will take place on Monday, June 18th (Sox at Braves). Stay tuned for final confirmation!

No 'I' In JETER?

Derek Jeter - Team Player?  Did anyone else notice that with his 25-game hitting streak on the line, Derek Jeter swung at a 3-0 pitch for the first time since the 2002 season?  According to Stats, Inc., Jeter had taken 3-0 pitches 118 consecutive times from the start of the 2003 season until Sunday night's fourth at-bat.  He wound up grounding out softly to first, the runner who moved to third was stranded, and the 4-2 Yankees' lead turned into a 5-4 Sox win. 

As the terrific Joe Sheehan of Baseball Prospectus observed, "Let's be clear about this: Jeter was swinging to extend the hitting streak."

Jimmy Leyland could manage a Starbucks, and this reporter would bet on them to make the postseason….Speaking of Starbucks, the melon and green tea latte should have stayed in the lab….On the day after they introduced Derek Jeter’s new cologne “Driven,” Avon saw the stock price tank by 16%.

The Independence Bowl still has no sponsor….In a recent issue of New York Magazine, Johnny Damon referred to his wife as “a five-tool player.”  Good to hear that the Yankees will have a throwing arm in CF on Family Day….Must be in Big Unit’s contract that the Yankees use Teaneck (NJ) Police Dept. radar guns at the Stadium when he pitches.  They got a gas station going 30 mph in Teaneck last week.

Wild Card Warning: Tigers Not Tanking

ON'T LOOK NOW, but a team that has finished an average of 31 games behind the Red Sox over the past five seasons is threatening to bring the AL Wild Card to an unlikely home - the AL Central. While it is not surprising to see the defending champion White Sox playing .650 baseball (translates to 105 wins) as we approach the halfway point in the season, the jaw-dropper is that they are neck-and-neck with......the Detroit Tigers.
